Arizona’s Papago Park was once the home of the Maricopa, Pima, and Papago tribes. Pima and Papago weavers have produced some of the most beautiful coiled basketry in the Southwest. Using willow, cattail, and beargrass, weavers constructed baskets with black designs that worked with a crawling desert vine called Devil’s Claw. Baskets were woven to carry food, water, and possessions, and used as furniture, as shields and helmets, and to serve wine at the yearly saguaro wine festival. The Pima and Papago tribes are now known as the Akimel and Tohono O’odham. Their weavers produce modern baskets of beauty, elegance, and strength. Design © Pendleton Woolen Mills, Inc.
